elephant The metaphor in Orwell's piece is that the elephant represents the town of Burma and the Burmese represent the elephant. The Burmese utilize the resourses of the elephant just like the British are utilizing the resourses of the town of Burma. I think the elephant taking a long time to die is a metaphor for the British occupation taking a long time to die. elephant

Metaphorically, the elephant is a significant chunk of the natural inhabitants of Burma. Killing the elephant is like killing many other animals. There is a lot of life that must escape the elephant before he is completely dead.

If the elephant is a metaphor for a country under imperialist rule as we discussed in class, what might Orwell be saying about those countries?

How is that like Burma? What happens to the people of an occupied nation? What is happening to the people in this story? How does the narrator describe his interactions with the people and what he observes about their situation under imperialist rule?

The thing about the elephant is that the second shot the elephant stood back up, and he was fighting death with all his might, I think think that this is representing the human will to live and survive and no matter what brings us down the will to live will bring us back up. elephant

The elephant taking so long to die is showing the dramatic space in time for the main character to relize his mistake eventhough he doesnt say it.

the Elephant is a strong power and it is not easy to bring down an elephant. the metaphor he uses is a good one b/c people want to stop the powerful elephant, but no single person can actually complete the task everyone is going to need to defeat the elephant, they are going to need to come together as a whole. This theory apparently comes true due to the death of the elephant. But the big ? now is whatare the people going to do?

The man who shoots the elephant shoots it without studying the best and most merciful way to kill an elephant. He made the decision on the spot because of the pressure he was under from the hungry Burmans. He shoots the elephant in the wrong place, putting it through a slow agonizing death. It takes it a long time because he didn't know where to shoot the elephant to make it's death close to instant and relatively unpainful.
The metaphor here is the manner in which Britain is slowly killing Burma; instead of quickly ending all their lives they imprison them and let them slowly rot in their cells.
